It says that WHO had the policy more than a year before Kochi announced it. WHO has, in fact, never changed their policy toward DDT. They use it if it will work and is inexpensive enough, but they use it only when it works and with careful monitoring. They prefer other methods. Here’s the 2009 statement — which is the same as the 2005 statement, same as the 1990 statement . . .

This year the DDT “poison Africa now” bunch have their knickers in a twist because WHO has concluded DDT isn’t very effective in very many places, and so has effectively stopped using it again.

No, indoor use of DDT in Indoor Residual Spraying won’t create any major problem — but then, it also won’t produce much of a benefit. DDT is largely ineffective against mosquitoes, there are more effective pesticides to use, there are more effective repellents, and bed nets are cheaper and more effective.

And, just to cap it off, IRS is the program Rachel Carson urged in 1962. Had we taken the “greenie” program then, malaria would be much less of a problem today.

Monckton’s still in the wrong.
