Since food and drink are frowned upon in Capitol hearing rooms, we’re sorry, but neither will be available.

Starting from the reality-grounded premise that compromise is a necessary and honorable fact of political life - especially when different parties control different branches of government - what deals ought Minnesota conservatives seek in future legislative sessions?

Might there be ways, for example, for conservatives to achieve some of their key goals regarding taxes, education, energy, pensions, and the environment by reaching imaginative, win-win understandings with liberals? What might such possible trade-offs look like? (“Deals” and “trade-offs,” by the way, are also seen here as necessary and honorable.)

The Minnesota House of Representatives will conduct two public hearings on childcare unionization on Monday, October 24th at 7:00 PM. One in Rochester and one in St. Cloud.

Update: Here are some of the news reports from Saint Cloud and Rochester from last night’s hearings. While these news reports are rather weak on the facts, the comments from readers are encouraging. People understand that this threat to impose a public union on privately own small businesses is a clumsy attempt to increases the dues-paying base for AFSCME and SEIU. If, however, Governor Dayton (mis)uses the power of the state and issues an executive order even for an election, clumsy becomes brutish. And a terrible precedent will be set for Minnesota if Dayton and the unions succeed. Unions are casting around for more dues; next will be in-home healthcare workers. We will post any video as it becomes available.

The SEIU and AFSCME unions are still driving towards forcing Minnesota’s 11,000 independent, home-based childcare providers to unionize. This will result in higher childcare costs and the only tangible benefit will be to the unions who are hoping to swell their coffers by another $3.3 million per year in forced union dues.

Governor Dayton is sympathetic to the union’s cause and could move at any time to sign an executive order calling for a vote to establish the childcare providers unions.

You can help stop this ridiculous scheme!

The Minnesota House is holding public hearings in St. Cloud and Rochester on Monday, October 24th at 7:00 PM. Parents with children in daycare and childcare providers who live in these areas are urged to attend and testify.

Rep. Steve (the “Draz”) Drazkowski to speak at Uof M on Right to Work Amendment: Noon Oct. 27th

The Student Employment and Labor Law Association (SELLA) at the U of M Law School is hosting a lunchtime panel discussion Thursday, Oct. 27th, in Auerbach Commons, on the topic of right-to-work legislation. The specific focus is likely to be on the proposed right-to-work constitutional amendment which stalled in the Minnesota legislature this past summer.

The event is co-sponsored by the Federalist Society. Here is the link to the National Right to Work foundation in DC. Educate yourself so you can help the upcoming debate in Minnesota. This is a basic liberty issue for employees and employers.

Confirmed speakers include Justin Cummins (Miller O’Brien Cummins); Rick Ross (Fredrikson & Byron); Bernie Hesse (UFCW); Representative Steve Drazkowski along with Rep. Steve Drazkowski (R-Distrct 28B Mazeppa) . Here is the flier. This could be a lot of fun!

As with all student events, do not plan on getting any food! Eat before or after the event (you may be lucky enough to snag a slice of pizza). Parking is tricky, too. Here are parking and directions .
